DIRECTOR'S CORNER
Dear Parents,
The holidays are over and your children are all starting to settle into a regular routine. I hope that you all had memorable holidays and were able to find some time to relax. I know that the staff and I truly enjoyed this past holiday period at Kids Inc. The preschool staff took pleasure in having so many parents volunteer and share their holiday experiences with the preschool program. The school age children and staff thoroughly enjoyed their two weeks of vacation - planning, organizing and implementing new and innovative programming.
Since most of the staff have not been here through this period the bonuses were a big surprise. One staff person called to thank me and she told me, as she opened her envelope she hooted, and each time a bill fell out of her envelope she screamed with surprise and joy. Another staff person confided in me that because of the holiday bonus, her family was able to purchase an item for which they had been saving for a long time. An other staff person shared with me that he thought about the generosity of Kids Inc parents all weekend and it has enhanced his experience as a staff person here at Kids Inc. He realizes the depth of community that surrounds this program. Thank you for your generosity and your support as we continue to build and grow into a cohesive group of educators for your children.
As we move through January, I have been busy accomplishing many tasks. Our new brochures and business cards are at the printers, and the website is almost finished. Kindergarten and preschool tours are beginning this week, and I am also beginning to think about summer 2007. Soon you will be asked to register for fall 2007, (in March).
Kids Inc tuition will be going up in the fall of 2007. In order to retain quality staff it is important to keep abreast of increasing wages and benefits. Our operating expenses have continued to increase such as utilities, repair and maintenance, and supplies and transportation, especially since we have started to use Seattle School District buses. I think that it is important for you to understand how your tuition dollars are spent. A package will be put in your file, along with our new business card and an explanation of the increase. Please feel free to call me or email me if you have any questions regarding tuition at Kids Inc, either about the increase or about how your tuition dollars are used. Thanks once again for all your support.

OTTER DEN
Hello, Hello, Hello, good to be back!
As you all know, I was off for the two weeks around the holidays. Hope you all had a wonderful time. In December we talked about the weather and had our field trip to the Seattle Center and saw the holiday train display and rode the carousel. We also got VERY wet in the rain, but had a great time with the puddles.
As for January, we will be starting off with time and clocks, move into winter and then we will be doing some building with wood, clay and wire. Then comes the State of Washington to learn about and then we will finish off the month with Dinosaurs.A trip to the Burke Museum is in the near future.
Just a reminder, to please dress your children appropriately for our weather. Wedo go out most days, rain or shine!. I would also like to thank you for all the wonderful gifts over the holidays.

PANDA POSSE
Pandas!
We hope that everyone had a nice holiday and are glad to see those of you who took time off. We had an extremely busy month of December and are preparing ourselves for a busy January. Our themes for January will be Night and Day, the Winter Season, and Outer Space. We are continuing our weekly trips to the West Woodland Library and are hoping to take a walk to the Ballard Public LibraryBranch for story time.
Starting this month, the Pandas will be participating in a music and movement activity every Wednesday led by Polly. We are hoping that we can successfully add in the element of theatrics and puppetry as well. Please remember to check cubbies and files daily for announcements.

GRIZZLIES
Welcome 2007! Happy New Year!
With the New Year, here are some NEW happenings at Kids Inc. Due to Valerie’s school schedule she is unable to work the afternoons and will be going to substitute status for the next quarter. We were fortunate enough to find Reid Strange (see bio on earlier page), who will be taking over Valerie’s shift in the afternoons. Stop by and introduce yourself to Reid.
Our projects are coming along and are posted weekly on the bulletin board by the entrance to the center. If you have any ideas or requests for projects, please let us know and we will see what we can do.
Please remember to send your children with appropriate outerwear. The days have been completely variable this year, with one day being 50 degrees and the next it’s down to freezing or the wind is blowing horrendously. If it’s not raining, we try to get the kids out, even if it’s just for a few minutes, so we recommend layers and that way the kids can shed or add as the temperature changes.
We would also like to thank you for being such supportive parents and thank you for all the goodies around the holidays.
And please don’t forget to let us know if your child is out sick, having a play date, or someone else is picking them up

KING SNAKES
Happy 2007 New Year!
We hope that you all were able to enjoy your holidays, and now that things are back in session, we are ready to go. Hopefully, the weather will get a little more uplifting so we can go outside in the afternoons, while there is still light, but if not, we do get out to the gym.
We have moved on to winter sports, including basketball, floor hockey and much more, but have no fear, we will still continue some of the classics.
Over winter break we did lose a great member of 105, “Google”, our dwarf hamster, passed away. We’ve had a talk with the kids and they should all know. Hopefully soon, we will get another pet, but no specific date has been set.
We are gearing up for some other exciting programs in 105! First up, is our tech program. We will be utilizing Kids Inc. computers to explore the online world by creating our own web pages, sending email, and learning how to use internet resources like Google and Yahoo, to search for information. A major component of this will be a comprehensive internet safety curriculum, which will teach our kids how to protect themselves from things like internet predators and cyber bullying.
Jay, one of the King Snake teachers, was also part of a theatre sports troupe for 2 years and is bringing his experience to Kids Inc. We will be forming our own troupe, and will be learning a whole bunch of games and exercises that will be fun, challenging and will increase our skills as actors. Hopefully in the spring, we will be able to showcase our talents with an evening performance.

During Winter Break, 3 groups of children went on a scavenger hunt in downtown Seattle They were sent with a list of things to find, a map, camera and bus tickets. Children and staff alike reported that this was one of the best field trips they have every been on. We are thinking of making this a week-long event this summer.
